
What Size Excavator Do You Need?
Turn the job into the machine: how required dig depth, reach, lift, site access and transport point to a mini, midi, standard or large excavator.
Match the work to the machine: describe the job, and it comes down to dig depth, reach, weight class, tail swing, and transport. This guide walks that mapping — from the trench you have to dig to the class of machine that digs it.
Depth-driven jobs
Rule of thumb: the machine's max dig depth should exceed the required depth by 15–20% — spec-sheet depth is measured at the ideal position with a flat bottom stroke, and real trenches need over-dig for bedding and shoring.
- Irrigation / electrical / gas laterals (0.5–1.2 m / 2–4 ft): any mini.
- Water/sewer laterals, septic (1.5–2.5 m / 5–8 ft): large mini (4–6 t) or midi; midi if spoil must be cast away from the trench.
- Residential basement (dig 2.4–3 m / 8–10 ft plus over-dig): practical floor is the midi class, but a standard 13–20 t machine is the right answer — e.g. "dig 18-ft basements" needs ~5.5 m of true dig depth ⇒ a 20-ton class machine (6.5 m+ max dig). If the phrase is "18-ft basements in tight lots", add reduced/zero tail swing ⇒ e.g. Komatsu PC138US-class or a CR/US variant of a 13–22 t machine.
- Deep sewer mains, 5–7 m: 20–36 t, and check reach — depth without reach means constant repositioning.
- Ponds, canals, dredging: long-reach configuration; reach matters more than depth.
Reach- and lift-driven jobs
- Loading trucks: the machine must out-reach the truck side wall; a 20-ton machine loads standard dump trucks comfortably, a mini cannot.
- Setting pipe/structures: check lift charts, not just weight class — lifting over the side on a zero-tail mini is the weakest case.
- Demolition: weight class buys stability and attachment capacity (breaker/shear weight); 20 t minimum for single-story structural demo.
Site-constraint driven choices
- Access gate/side yard under 1.8 m: mini with retractable undercarriage or sub-6-ft width (Bobcat E35 class or smaller).
- Working against walls / property lines / traffic: reduced or zero tail swing (see the tail-swing guide).
- Soft ground / finished surfaces: rubber tracks (minis/midis) or bolt-on pads.
- Inside structures / low overhead: check cab height and consider a canopy (fixed cab heights ~2.4–2.6 m on minis).
Production-driven sizing
Moving dirt is bucket size × cycles. A 20-ton machine (~1 m³ bucket) moves roughly 8–10× what a 3.5 t mini (~0.09 m³) moves per hour. Undersizing a mass excavation job costs far more in labor-hours than the rental/purchase delta.
Transport as a constraint
If the buyer owns only a pickup + 10k trailer, cap at ~4 t operating weight. Midi (8 t) needs a 14–16k tag trailer and a medium-duty tow vehicle. Anything in the standard class rides a lowboy — if they don't own one, every move is a hired haul, which argues for the biggest machine that STAYS on site, or the smallest machine that does the job when it moves weekly.
